The origin of the Moon and binary asteroids

  • N.N. Gorkavyi Crimean Astrophysical Observatory

Proposed multi-impact model explains the origin of the Moon, the Charon and binary asteroids without space catastrophes. Basic statements of the new model: 1. Initial low-mass prograde protosatellite disk existed around the proto-Earth. 2. Most of Moon’ material was ejected from the Earth’s mantle under the influence of large asteroids. This explains deficit of iron on the Moon. 3. Collisions of Earth’ eject with particles of prograde protosatellite disk stabilize debris on satellite orbits. We showed high efficiency of multi-impact mechanism: Earth’s eject on prograde orbits easy joins prograde protosatellite disk, but retrograde eject returns to the Earth.
